Tips

FM reception is usually better outside or near windows. Different spots in your home may provide vastly different qualities of reception for different stations. Reception varies depending on weather.

AM reception depends on the direction that the radio is facing for most radios. Others have an external loop antenna. AM range improves greatly at night: You can even pick up some stations from Canada from North Carolina, but stations will fade out sometimes. Electronics cause more interference to AM than FM, so get as far away from electronics as possible or turn them off and unplug them where possible and see if AM reception improves. Phone chargers are serious offenders, so don't leave them plugged in. Try your AM reception when sitting outside.

Placing your radio on or near a metal surface can sometimes improve FM or AM reception. Metal surfaces can reflect radio waves, causing either destructive or constructive interference at different distances.
